Maritime ISR environmental characterization challenges in the GIUK gap and Barents Sea Opening. Russo, Aniello; Storto, Andrea; Borrione, Ines; Oddo, Paolo; Falchetti, Silvia. CMRE-MR-2018-011. April 2019.

This report concerns Maritime ISR environmental characterization in two strategic areas, i.e. the so-called Greenland-Iceland-United Kingdom (GIUK) gap and the Barents Sea Opening/Svalbard Islands. The first section of the report introduces the basic elements of M-ISR environmental characterization. The next three sections describe the activities conducted by the EKOE programme in 2018 in the two areas in terms of glider fleet operations, model and code development and implementation. The fifth section shows a first assessment of forecasting skills and examples of produced maps of temperature, salinity, sound speed, sea ice, providing also a qualitative comparison among observations and models. The final section summarizes and discusses the obtained results, giving indications for the next steps.
