The quietest ship in its class, the NATO Research Vessel (NRV) Alliance was designed to minimize noise radiating from the ship into the water, making it an excellent platform for sonar testing and other types of research where a quiet undersea environment is essential. The 93-metre, 3,180-ton, openocean research vessel offers 400 square metres of laboratory space and state-of-the-art navigation, computer, and communication equipment.

Acquired in 2002, Coastal Research Vessel (CRV) LEONARDO is a valuable asset to CMRE’s programme of work, contributing significantly to the scientific successes of the Centre. The vessel provides complementary capability to NRV ALLIANCE, especially in shallow waters.

CMRE aims at increasing the capabilities of autonomous underwater vehicles by using synthetic aperture sonar to quickly and reliably detect, classify, and localize mines.

pdf Counter-Piracy

Since 2008, NATO has been providing protection from piracy in international waters in the Gulf of Aden and the Horn of Africa. The solution to piracy, which may be some time in coming, ultimately lies on shore. Until then, counter-piracy includes multinational policing operations and fortifying merchant vessels for pirate avoidance and the prevention of boarding. The Centre addresses elements of these in several projects.

One challenge that NATO faces is the vulnerability of its military forces and critical infrastructure to terrorist attacks from the waterside in ports and harbours.
CMRE is developing a system concept for early contact and warning above and below the water in ports.
The Centre is also engaging military and civilian security providers early in the concept development cycle in this new area of research by hosting conferences, offering courses and hosting virtual red-on-blue gaming exercises on CMRE's OpenSea Tactical Theatre Simulator.

A key to developing autonomous systems for NATO is communication among data gathering platforms below and above the water. Unlike mature network technologies that are used above water, underwater communication is in its nascent stages. The Centre is uniquely positioned to develop the necessary technologies and to help develop and promote the necessary standards and protocols for interoperable communication and networking environments.

The Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE), directed by Dr Catherine Warner, is an established, world-class NATO scientific research and experimentation facility located in La Spezia, Italy.
The CMRE has over 50 years of service to NATO in its former establishments as the NATO Undersea Research Centre and as SACLANTCEN. CMRE conducts state-of-the-art scientific research and experimentation ranging from concept development to prototype demonstration in an operational environment and has produced a cadre of leaders in ocean science, modeling and simulation, acoustics and other disciplines, as well as producing critical results and understanding that have been built into the operational concepts of NATO and the nations.

pdf OEX Autonomous Underwater Vehicles

The Ocean Explorer (OEX) is a sophisticated autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) and one of CMRE's most valuable assets. Developed at Florida Atlantic University, the OEX has undergone significant modifications at the Centre for use in the antisubmarine warfare programme and other projects.
