Support Services (Supplementary Work Programme)
The Centre provides services and outputs for other sponsors through its Supplementary Work Program (SWP). These activities are undertaken to accelerate implementation of new military capabilities for NATO and the Nations, to provide assistance to the Nations, and to ensure that the Centre’s maritime capabilities are sustained in a fully productive and economic manner.
Over the years NURC has procured and developed specialised equipment and protocols used to conduct underwater research, test concepts, perform sea trials and acceptance tests. Our physical facilities include 2 research vessels, a 700 sq. m. workshop, 600 m storage and preparation area, test tanks and a technical library. Equipment include acoustic equipment, electronics, oceanographic sensors, etc.
Some of the facilities and equipment are available for use by organisations from NATO member nations such as research groups and defense contractors, on a cost recovery basis. In addition, NURC offers engineering capabilities that are supported by an engineering team with more 40 years experience in performing controlled scientific measurements at sea in conjunction with NURC scientific vessels.
Examples of supplementary work include the following:.
- Chartering of scientific vessels
- Rapid prototype development
- Concept development
- Scientific and engineering studies and consultancy
- Testing and evaluation
- Calibration of oceanographic instrumentation
- Calibration of acoustic transducers and arrays
- Sonar performance measurements under realistic but controlled conditions
- Radiated noise measurements
- Target strength measurements
- Provision of acoustic receive and transmit equipment for specialized measurements
- Bathymetric and environmental assessment
- Medium term monitoring of ocean environment
- Other maritime service capabilities
