Cinque Terre by boat. Departing from the Piazza Garibaldi in Lerici (the large piazza near the castle) to the Cinque Terre – the famous five towns built into the side of cliffs.  The last boat back from Porto Venere is 1730 and will arrive in Lerici about 1800.  For more information on the Cinque Terre see: http://www.cinqueterreonline.com/

Florence. An open-air exhibition of art and culture, it is famous worldwide as the heart of the Renaissance period and the home of fine arts and literature. Examples of this culture include the sculpture of David by Michelangelo, the Ponte Vecchio, and Giotto’s bell tower.  Florence is also known for its residents - Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo or Dante AlighieriFlorence is two hours east of Lerici by car or train.

Lucca. This city was founded in 180 B.C. to defend the surrounding territory that was the site of violent conflicts between Ligurians and Romans.  Within the confines of the large wall surrounding the town is a town displaying the finest mediaeval treasures.  The centre is relatively unspoiled and is sprinkled with palazzi, towers and almost countless splendid churches. The surrounding hills produce some excellent wines and arguably the finest olive oil anywhere.  Lucca is accessible by car, an hour south of Lerici.  For more information see: http://www.knowital.com/html/homepage_for_knowital._lucca.php

Carrara. In the “Apuan Alps”, you will find the marble mines of Carrara. This is where marble has been extracted for centuries. The marble found here is unique in the world for its shine, which is why Michelangelo Buonarroti came here personally to select the marble slabs he used for his masterpieces - such as his David and Pietàs.  Carrara is 30 minutes east of Lerici by car.
