Naval Mine Warfare has been conducted in the same manner for 60 years, while capability requirements and operational constraints have changed. Advances in unmanned vehicle navigation, control, and sonar processing in robotic sensor technology have enabled improvements in the speed and capability of mine hunting missions. The final task of MCM, mine neutralisation, is currently, in addition to EOD divers, being performed remotely by using either a re-usable ROV or ‘one shot’ mine disposal system delivering an explosive charge.  Design of current mine-disposal devices is driven by the need to be able to perform positive identification, prior to neutralisation, in order to minimize the number of munitions used.

The workshop will focus on recent research efforts related to sea mine disposal performed by academia, government laboratories and industry.  There will be presentations, working groups, and roundtable discussions about current programmes by the attending participants.  These will provide opportunities for discussion of coordinated efforts and future collaborations that will maximize the benefit of limited research funding and eliminate duplicative efforts.

Interested individuals from NATO member nations from academia, government laboratories and industry are invited to attend and/or propose topics for discussion. A meeting for participants to discuss the establishment of a joint research programme (JRP) will follow on April 16.
