Two JANUS events in the spring

Underwater acoustic communications

In the coming month of May CMRE is organising two JANUS events. The first (being held between the 14th and 18th of May) is the JANUS Interoperability fest. The JANUS Interoperability Fest is an experimental activity primarily targeted at industry where we will collectively exercise interoperability through JANUS.

CMRE will be part of the new season of the European Robotics League

Attendees, real and virtual, at the kick-off meeting of the SciRoc project

Once again this year, CMRE is participating in the European Robotics League (ERL), a pan-European competition format which aims to provide a platform for challenging, developing and showcasing robotics technologies, bridging the gap between Industry, Research and the public. The novelty is that the competition will reach our everyday lives with its new tournament category called "Smart Cities".

During his January 2018 visit to CMRE, the NATO Chief Scientist Dr. Thomas Killion presented the NATO STO Scientific Achievement Award to CMRE staff for their contributions to "Development and Demonstration of Networked Autonomous ASW".

2018 starts for CMRE with the Iceland-Greenland Seas Project

On 17 January the NATO Research Vessel Alliance, under the custodianship of CMRE and managed by an Italian Navy Crew, will depart from La Spezia to head towards the marginal ice zones of the northwest Iceland Sea and southwest Greenland Sea to conduct a challenging and highly valued oceanographic campaign run by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI).

Dr. Catherine Warner takes over as Director of the CMRE

On 1 November Dr Catherine Warner succeeded RADM Hank Ort NLD-N (Retired), as Director of NATO’s Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation.

Part of NATO's Science and Technology organization, CMRE continues to work closely with Allied Command Transformation (ACT) to address areas of maritime strategic interest while diversifying products and services with organizations across NATO, the Nations and industry.

NATO’s front line, immediate readiness force in the Southern Region, the Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 (SNMG2), has been carrying out ground-breaking trials with the S&T Organisation’s Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE).

On 16-17 October 2017, in the Ligurian Sea area, CMRE run an Operational Experimentation (OPEX) in cooperation with Standing Naval Maritime Group 2  (HMS DIAMOND, TCG BARBAROS and ESPS BLAS DE LEZO). HMS DIAMOND was able to deploy, operate and recover an underwater glider as an organic asset.

DYNAMIC MONARCH 17 - JANUS tested in distressed submarine rescue scenarios

The NATO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE) participated for the first time in the DYNAMIC MONARCH exercise, bringing to the operational players a new digital underwater acoustic communications capability that may increase significantly the effectiveness of distressed submarines (DISSUB) escape and rescue operations.

The NATO Research Vessel ALLIANCE, operated by the Italian Navy for the CMRE, is sailing off the coast of Iceland, participating in NATO's MARITIME COMMAND (MARCOM) Submarine Warfare Exercise DYNAMIC MONGOOSE 2017 (DMON 17).

JANUS, the CMRE underwater communication protocol, becomes a NATO Standard

First time ever for a digital underwater communication protocol to be recognised at international level. The protocol opens the way for a standardised Internet of Underwater Things.

“Double-Muscled” start for CMRE 2017 scientific campaigns

The NRV Alliance just sailed for her first NATO sea trial of the year. New assets on board are aimed to enhance collaborative robotics for MCM applications, including a new vehicle, which only apparently duplicates the CMRE MUSCLE prototype.

Back from the French-led exercise Olives Noires 2016 , the NATO Research Vessel Alliance is now in the Ligurian Sea to continue scientific tests of new robotic solutions for naval mine countermeasures as part of the Multinational AutoNomous Experiment 2016 (MANEX ‘16).

From 5 to 31 July 2016, off the coast of Portugal, the Portuguese Navy, CMRE and the University of Porto operate again together in the maritime exercise which also marks the first international at-sea campaign for NRV Alliance under the Italian Flag.
